How to answer the timeless question “Why do you want to work for us?” in the most believable way.

This question comes up during every single interview, in every single round, by every single person who is interviewing you. I genuinely hate this question, but it’s a necessary evil. Why do you think I wanna work for you? Obviously I want to make some fuckin money, but I also really hate myself, and sales is the only profession that will allow me to continue justifying my self-hatred, while also selling my soul for a few bucks. Now, you can’t say that during the interview, but after answering this question 100’s of times in 100’s of interviews, I’ve created a framework that will help guide you to the right answer, all while sounding like you actually give a shit.

It’s called The 3P’s. The 3P’s are Product, Promotion, and People. Whenever this question get’s asked in an interview, you just need to use this framework to create the best answer. Here’s an example.

If you’re interviewing for a company like HubSpot, you can say something like:
Great question, (persons name)! I’ve thought a lot about why HubSpot and why now, and it really boils down to 3 things.

The first one is the product, I know the impact it can make for a sales/marketing team as I’ve been an avid user myself, but more importantly, I believe in the product and I absolutely know that I can be excited to provide HubSpot as a solution to any prospect I come across.

I also believe there is a great path to promotion in this company. I’ve seen the progression of sales people moving into leadership roles, and as someone with aspirations of leadership, I know that if I put in the effort, I can reach my 5 year plan of becoming a manager.

Lastly, one of the most important factors that really define a company are the people behind it. I’ve followed Brian Halligan and Darmesh Shah for a few years and have been very excited to see this new age of HubSpot come about from their vision. I’m positive that the people who I’ll be surrounded with will be an incredible source of motivation in my pursuit of excellency in my role at HubSpot.

I almost puked writing this shit, but you have to be able to bullshit your way through this answer without saying the obvious lines of, "oh I’m very competitive and I like making money and blah blah blah” that shit doesn’t help you stick out anymore.

So just to finalize, talk about the following like this:
Product-let them know you believe in it, maybe do some research on a specific component of the product and talk about it during the interview. Make sure to hit on the fact that you feel confident and comfortable that you can sell it.

Promotion-even though you may not want to be in management, just saying you have a 5 year plan to be in management makes you sound like you got your shit together. Just mention that this company will provide you with the best path to promotion.

People-do some research on some of the leaders, and touch on the fact that you’ve been so impressed by what the company has accomplished with it’s current employees and that you’re super excited to join and be a part of an already amazing squad.
